Study - Sunrise on Canal Road
We lived in the small village of Fort Sumner, New Mexico, for about seven years, a close-knit ranching community with very little commerce, but rich in history and wonderful sense of community spirit.
Most mornings, I walked along Canal Road, aptly named because it follows an age-old irrigation canal that has quietly served the area for generations. Those walks became a daily source of inspiration. The other side of Canal Road was lined with timeworn homes and long-forgotten structures, weathered and worn, some struggling to stand but standing they were, a testament to the endurance of the community.
The large, long-abandoned building depicted in this painting sparked countless conversations about what it might once again become, how it could be restored, repurposed, and given a grand rebirth. None of the ideas were especially practical, but imagining them was part of the fun.
This painting is one of several that grew out of those quiet morning walks, shaped by the history, texture, and stubborn beauty of Fort Sumner.
